Weather: Sunny day.
Amy is a poor girl in my class. She has a dysfunctional family. Her father is always drunk and sexual abused her. This morning, Amy didn’t bring her homework because her father was drunk again last night. She said that she was afraid of this and was concerned that her father would hurt her, and that’s why she didn’t do the homework. What a poor girl! The social workers knew about this situation and planned to take her away from her father. She told me she doesn’t want to leave her father but she felt afraid of him especially when he is drunk. I don’t know how to help her. Personally, I wish she could leave her father, but I know every child needs their parents even if their parents are not good. I just told her that she should be brave to face this problem and choose the right way to protect herself. I’m not sure whether she can understand what I’m talking about. What I can do now is wish God could help her to overcome this most difficult problem in her life.

Weather: Just Hot! Hot! Hot!
I got the result of IELTS. The scores of four sections are as follows: Listening 6, Reading 6.5, Writing 5, and Speaking 6. The overall score is 6. I’m a little bit surprised because to be honest, I didn’t study hard before the test. I wondered why my listening and Reading scores made such a big progress. I might had have a little bit of good luck at that time. Nevertheless, I just got a 5 in writing because of the lack of practice. I regreted that I didn’t spend much time to practice writing before the test. Otherwise I might have gotten a ‘full 6’, and my presessional course could be shortened. But I know it’s too late.
A lot of Taiwanese fell in love with Aska’s voice. Actually, I should say, everyone gets crazy now (Including me). There are more then 30,000 people who visited his blog everyday and more than 1000 messages were left by his fans in one day. Every News channel reported his news yesterday. And the most famous spoof (gag) show in Taiwan made Aska as a main topic yesterday. Three days ago, few of my co-workers knew him, but three days later, everyone knows him. Like everybody else, I fall in love with his voice, too. Or should I say, I’ve become Aska’s fan.
Aska wrote a short article called ‘Before’ this morning. The main meaning of the article was saying that he used to swim under the sunshine, enjoy the sun light beside the swimming pool, sing songs and enjoy his own voice alone. Now, the new superstar needs to overcome a totally different life. He can’t swim in the pool as free as before because there are always crazy fans waiting for him. He also has to deal with negative feedbacks such as the criticisms about his appearance But I think as a superstar, this is the first difficult task he should overcome, isn’t it?

Today is the hottest day in Taiwan this year. The temperature reached to 37 Celsius degree in Taipei. It’s really summer time. That also means that it’s approaching to the time I start my student life in UK. To be honest, I’m a little bit anxious about this because of my poor English. What’s more, IoE hasn’t given me any reply of the result of my essays yet. Almost everybody knows that I am going to study abroad this June and I’m arranging to hand over my administrative job to the other teacher. What if IoE doesn’t give me the permission? Oh~ God bless me!

There is a Chinese singing competition called one million star broadcasting on TV recently and it has become more and more popular in Taiwan. People are discussing who will win the championship and 1 million NTD in the end of the competition. A singer called Aska Yaing is thought to be the most possible one to win the first place. He is a really special guy. He doesn’t have a good looking face but has an outstanding voice. In Taiwan, it is important to have a good appearance if you want to become a super star. I believe that Aska Yaing would become an exception in the future. Almost everyone will appreciate his voice when hearing his performance. Actually, he has become more and more famous nowadays because of this programme. One Chinese fans said (see, he has had a Chinese fans already): ‘If he can’t not become a super star in the future, God will become angry.” People said that he is a genius singer and he was born to sing songs for everybody. I also fall in love with his voice and hope that he can become a real super star some day in the future. Good Luck, Aska!

Weather: Rainy Day
Last weekend, one of my students had a finger broken by three girls in my class. The reason of this was that those three girls were playing game and pushed each others in the back of my classroom. Unfortunately, one girl fell and landed on the poor boy’s finger with her knees. Once I noticed that something had happened, it was too late. He cried on his seat and those three girls were saying sorry to him. I knew that those girls didn’t do it on purpose, but I couldn’t stand not to reprimand (scold) them. I told my students that it is vital to keep them selves away from danger at any time because no one could pay back if they become disabled.
Nevertheless, what made me much angrier was that, in this morning, one of those girls was playing and running around the classroom again. Fortunately, nothing bad happened this time. But I still felt very angry and spent almost 30 minutes to discipline them how dangerous it was and what would happened if I hadn’t stopped them from running around the classroom.
It is really a serious problem for elementary teachers because we have responsibilities to keep all students safe. If students were injured at school, their parents would always blame that teachers didn’t take care of their children well. I will try my best to teach and guide my students in the school. But everybody knows, some students never follow rules and it is difficult to control students’ activities during their free time. I think that keeping students safe is the biggest work pressure in my job.

Today is just a normal day. Nothing special happened.
Because of my IELTS test is approaching, I decided to review my essays which I wrote before and to remember some specific words or ideas. I admit that this time, I didn’t prepare for IELTS test seriously as last time but the score may be better if I’m not as nervous as the last two tests. (Would it be possible?)
There is an interesting news on today’s newspaper. It is reported that there are more and more Taiwanese students who want to study abroad. The percentage of students studying abroad has reached to a peak since 2003. It was analysed that students chose to study abroad because they think study environment in Taiwan are not good enough or they need more stimulants from other countries. I think that is not a bad thing for Taiwan. But this is also a warning for Taiwanese educational systems. The reasons that Taiwanese would like to study abroad need to be analysed delicately. Do they just want to have extra experiences or are they just not satisfied at Taiwanese educational systems? I think that this is a serious issue which needs to be noticed by the Taiwanese government.

Since the Hakka song competition was cancelled, the method which I comforted the students was through food and entertainment. I bought 28 pudding-favoured popsicles to treat the students who felt disappointed that they couldn’t attend the competition any more, and play Doraemon (a Japanese cartoon) which is still one of the most popular children cartoons in Taiwan for them. Fortunately, children were easy to please and satisfy. They forgot the bad news immediately and really enjoyed their popsicles and Doraemon very much.
As usual, I attended my English class with Cherry at Monday 7 o’clock. When we almost finished the class, Cherry encouraged me to put my diaries in Blog which can make money for me. I thought that my diaries didn’t have any secretive context and that’s good if it can really make money for me. ‘Why not try it?’ I thought. So I started establish my new blog called ‘Sandy Liu’s English Diary” and told my friends that I have another English blog aside from the Chinese one. However, I still don’t know how it can make money for me. I think I should spend some time to figure out how this blog works.
Oh! I still have an IELTS test this Saturday but I haven’t started to prepare for it yet. I know that writing diaries is totally different from formal essays. I have to revise my previous essays as soon as possible otherwise the score will be lower than last time!

My school held a parents and teachers’ socials yesterday afternoon. We planned to see fireflies in a beautiful mountain but the weather was too bad to see any. It rained all afternoon and children were disappointed that they couldn’t see any fireflies. We just chatted all afternoon and waited for dinner time and raffle draw. I’m one of the activities’ staff and dealing with all little problems in this activity made me feel tired. When the activities finished, my legs felt sore and all parts of my body just wanted to take a rest. However, through this activity, parents could interact with each other and discuss problems with teachers, and that was the main purpose of this activity. I thought all toils were worth once we achieved the purpose.
Today was a lazy day. I wrote an article in my Chinese blog this morning. The title of the article is ‘It’s just a proper age for getting married’. I was discussing that woman always asks to get married around my age. It is a kind of social pressure and there are always a lot of friends who want to introduce some good men to me. Recently, friends always ‘encourage’ me to find a blond as my boyfriend. I told them that I won’t reject any opportunity of making friends but won’t ask on purpose for a blond as my boyfriend. And my mission in London is studying, not chasing for my Mr. Right. Nonetheless, I am grateful that all my friends are still concerned about my future.
This afternoon, a Taiwanese singing competition TV programme attracted my attention. This competition’s purpose is to find a superstar who will sings Chinese songs in the future. I didn’t know when I stopped listening to Chinese songs. I’ve miss so many good Chinese songs! Through this programme, I realised that there are still lots of marvellous Chinese songs in Taiwan. What’s more, those competitors in this programmer were really good singers and they sounded really professional. I was totally attracted by their sound and believed any of them can be a super singer in the future in the field of Chinese songs. With those great new singers, I hope that Taiwan can not only be the kingdom of Chinese songs now but in the future.

It’s another busy day. This afternoon, it was announced that the competition of Hakka song has been cancelled this year. That means our training for the competition must be stopped! How will those students feel once they know the news? They might be sad because they lose a chance to win the championship. I should find a way to comfort them next Monday afternoon. However, that’s good news for me because I don’t need to teach Hakka song which I am not good at.

Today is a quite busy day. There is a competition of Hakka song in the end of May. I am assigned to direct 20 second grade student to attend the competition. Since now, I need to spend 2 hours every Monday and Thursday afternoon to teach those students how to sing with precise tune and to pronounce every correct Hakka word. Ironically, My Hakka is poor and it is even poorer than my English. But my school still appointed me to be the instructor of this competition because no teacher wants to direct those young children. Nonetheless, those 20 students are excellent and were chosen from 60 students to represent our school in this competition. I believe that the hard work will be worthy once we win the first place in the competition.
There is a thing that drives me very happy. One of my co-workers gave two of her new and expensive dresses to me. She married to a rich businessman so that her husband often goes shopping with her and pays for what she buys. She said there are too many clothes in her wardrobe and she wanted to give out her clothes. Fortunately, the two dresses totally fitted me! I couldn’t wait to dress one on once I get them and lots of my co-workers admired that I looked nice with the dresses. I think the two dresses with high quality fabric and perfect tailor must be expensive. I will never spend so much money to buy this kind of clothes in my life expect someone wants to pay for my. All in all, I got the dresses for free. Lucky!

It’s a general Monday. However, there is still something valuable to record. One of my co-workers told me that he is planning to argue some problems at teachers’ appointment on this Friday morning. But in my view, the problems he wanted to argue aren’t an important thing to every teacher in the meeting. I advised him not to argue problems which do not concern other teachers in the appointment, and he should discuss with our principal first to find out the better way to solve the problems. At last, he accepted my suggestion and talked with our principle this afternoon. I don’t know if the problems will be solved, but I’m sure that before doing any thing, thinking twice is better than acting roughly.
One student was crying when talking with her mother on telephone in the teachers’ office (Our school offers students an free telephone call in teachers’ office.) After she hanged up the phone, I asked her what happened. She told me that the Maths teacher in the cram school was too strict and she didn’t want to go to the cram school any more. So she argued about this with her mother in the phone. She said that teacher would bet her when she didn’t know the answer of his question. And when she encountered a question in Maths, she was afraid to ask him any question. And what’s more, her score in Maths didn’t have any progress in the middle exam. Personally, I don’t think that she should go to the cram school and she was just wasting her parents’ money. So I told her that she can study Maths by herself and save the money. If she has any Maths questions, she can ask me. I will do my best to solve the problems for her. I also gave my mobile phone number to her and told her ‘If your parents have any problem about this, please just call me. I’m glad to discuss this problem with your parents.” She stopped crying and promised me that she will do her best to make a big progress by herself.
Helping people is one of the happiest things in the world. Be a teacher, I can help people everyday, and it is the worthiest thing that I can do in the world, isn’t it?

I saw a film called “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” this morning. This film is adopted from the book whose author is C. S. Lewis. Several years ago, one of my mates recommended me to read Narnia and said it is a children’s book and the English is easy to understand. I also heard somebody say Narnia is better than Harry Potter. That’s the reason I am interested in it and decided to see the film first. I thought that I’ll read the English novel if the film doesn’t disappoint me.
Of course it wasn’t disappointing to me at all. I think it’s an amazing story no wonder so many people recommend this book. I haven’t read the book yet but I’ve gotten the e-book of Narnia from one of my co-workers. I hope have time to finish it before going to the UK.
I found a bank which might be able to grant me a loan of 1.6 million NTD. If it can promise to loan me such immense amount of money, it might be the solution of my financial problem in studying abroad. I wrote an e-mail to ask the clerk of that bank and I’m waiting for the positive reply (response). Good Luck!
In conclusion, this is a no-study weekend. I know that I should study and practise IELTS writing now, but the lazy part of me took over my mind. Writing dairy is a light job for me and I content myself that at least, I am still practising my English writing through writing this diary.

I know that my last IELTS test is approaching, but I didn’t study English the whole day. I packed winter clothes this morning in order to ship my stuff before leaving Taiwan. There are two big bags of clothes which weigh approximately 7kg respectively. There might be too many clothes because one box can’t contain more than 20kg otherwise the price of sea transportation would become much higher. But a lot of my shoes and the electric pot which I want to bring to UK haven’t been included in the box. Oh! It’s hard to give up any. I might shop two boxes of stuff to UK because I don’t want to spend much money on clothes or shoes in the UK.
Lots of people said that London is a shopping paradise so it’s hard not to go shopping in London especially for women. Taiwanese students in the UK suggested that new students don’t need to bring too many clothes and we mustn’t be able to resist this enticement. But the problem is that I don’t have much money to support those shopping. Finding enough money for studying abroad is my first hurdle. Financial ability has become a big problem for me especially when the exchange rate of GBP to NTD has reached to 1 to 66 now. Oh! God help me! (May God help me!)

I had stopped writing diary for maybe four years. I don’t know why I stopped writing. I might have been too busy in the beginning of my teaching life or just lazy. Anyway, I think to keep recording my daily life is important because people always forget what has happened in their life. Diary is a tool which can remind me that I have done such many things in the world.
One month ago, I started to write my own love story and share with my friends in my blog. I suddenly found that if I didn’t write diary at that time, it is impossible to remind myself so many details that happened in the past and those details would just be gone from my memory forever. So I made up my mind to write a diary again. But this time, I would like to do it in English. It is much more difficult for me to write in English than in Chinese, but I believe it can improve my English writing skill much and it is cool!
I’m calculating how may rest days I can have this afternoon. Because I plan to leave Taiwan on 23rd of Jun, I should apply 28 rest days in this term. Teachers in Taiwan can just only have 14 legal rest days a year and I need other 14 rest days (112 hours). So I started to extend my work time from 4pm to 6pm every day from this April in order to collect enough hours for 14 days. My co-workers said that I’m “the queen of rota (note 1)”.
There is another important thing for me. That is I bought a Tatung electric pot which is the most famous electric pot in Taiwan. It is an essential cooking tool for Taiwanese students. My assistant suggested me buy one and it cost me 1990 NTD. It’s a quite nice price. I will post it with sea transportation once I’m sure that I am offered a place in IoE. Good luck!
